What acids are generally present in fuel oil?
I asked my colleague who specializes in rapid quenching; it’s probably acids that contain sulfur, such as hydrogen sulfide, organic acids with sulfur bonds, and also carbonates formed from carbon dioxide! There is no specific analysis of the components. The pH is around 5.6; wash with sodium hydroxide! That’s all you need to know!

There are several types of fuel oils: vehicle fuel, aviation fuel, fuel for marine low-speed diesel engines, fuel for marine boilers, etc. The acidic components in oils generally refer to substances that can be titrated with standard bases under certain conditions (usually in a non-aqueous solvent). These substances are complex; some contain sulfur-containing groups, but most likely contain oxygen-containing groups, and there may even be some nitrogen-containing groups (not basic nitrogen). These components that appear acidic on the surface are not necessarily acids; they simply exhibit the property of being titrable with strong bases. Regarding some acid-base concepts in petroleum, it is necessary to distinguish them from the acidity and alkalinity of common aqueous solutions.
The name naphthenic acid is heard quite often; I’m not sure if it’s present in fuel oil
Naphthenic acid fractions are mainly concentrated between 200 and 300 degrees; they should also be present in fuel oils, as well as phenols.
