Why are the reported annual domestic production figures for PET and polyester not the same? The annual production of polyester is 12.1925 million tons per year, while that of PET is 31.65 million tons per year – aren’t they the same thing?
Polyesters are a general term for polymers formed by the polycondensation of polyols and polyacids. PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, is one type of polyester; it is obtained through the polycondensation of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, or it can also be produced by transesterification of polytrimethylene terephthalate with ethylene glycol. As for production statistics and classification, it’s not clear.
Statistics should not be uniform. Perhaps the years and categories of the statistics are different. Obviously, the range for polyesters is much wider.

It’s unclear whether, when counting polyesters, those other than PET are referred to, with PET being counted separately?

PET is a type of polyester; the two sources you mentioned surely aren’t the same. Is there currently 30 million tons of polyester produced in China?
