To control asphalt penetration, which related indicator is better to monitor?
In a vacuum distillation unit, one focuses on the distillation temperature of the last side stream; to achieve a higher penetration value, less product is taken out. Additionally, within such a unit, for the same type of feedstock, there is a certain relationship between penetration value and softening point!
The penetration of asphalt is related to its softening point as well as the dry point of the last side stream in the vacuum distillation tower.
Is it the withdrawal temperature at the bottom of the vacuum tower? Is there any correlation between penetration and viscosity?
It is the distillation temperature of the last side stream on the pressure-reduction side line; if this distillation temperature is high, the penetration value is low, while if the temperature is low, the penetration value is high! For the same type of oil, there is a relationship between penetration and softening point: lower penetration corresponds to a higher softening point, while higher penetration corresponds to a lower softening point! But all of the above are merely trends; if one insists on determining exactly how much the difference is, it’s impossible to do so! If it’s necessary to find such a figure, one can only estimate it based on the characteristics of each device, the amount of processing required, and experience.
