I would like to ask the experts in this field: is there an accurate definition for volatile media? For example, naphtha is volatile, while diesel is not. Are there any authoritative standards or guidelines that define this? Everyone knows that environmental regulations are becoming increasingly strict these days! This involves the issue of VOC emissions and recovery from volatile media! So I’m really curious to know where exactly the definitions and classifications for the volatility of various petrochemical products can be found
The volatility of a substance refers to its tendency to change from a liquid or solid state to a gaseous state. The volatility of a substance depends primarily on the forces acting between the particles that make up that substance (i.e., chemical bonds, van der Waals forces) as well as the relative molecular (atomic) mass of those particles; these factors also determine the boiling point of liquid substances. It is also related to external conditions such as pressure and saturated vapor pressure. There is a class of pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs); these compounds rapidly change from liquid or solid states to gas once they are exposed to air. The more volatile a substance is, the more likely it is to dissipate into the air.
