There are requirements regarding the length of straight pipes before and after the flow meter is installed, but I’ve been unsure about the extent to which this will affect the flow meter There is a flow meter in the plant whose installation location is quite poor – the straight pipe section ahead of it is only about 3D-4D in length, and the same distance applies behind it as well. I told my supervisor that measurements taken in such conditions will definitely be inaccurate. However, this is a legacy issue; now that the pipes have been fixed in place, it’s not possible to make changes anytime soon. I’m reaching out to seek advice from everyone here
Some flowmeters have no requirement for a straight pipe section, while others do. Depending on the type of flow meter, generally 10D ahead and 5D behind is required. Flow meters of the vortex street type require longer straight pipe sections. If the straight pipe section does not meet the requirements, it affects the measurement accuracy.
The measurement accuracy is not accurate; it is recommended to consult the manufacturer for simulation. If the conditions on site permit, testing and comparison can be carried out.
I don’t know whether your flow meter is for liquids or gases; just find a way to calibrate it on-site.
Just use it for now; it’s no big deal. No one will know how much of an impact it will have.
It’s hard to say even if there’s enough straight pipe section, let alone if there isn’t enough. According to unofficial information from a manufacturer, the worst possible installation of straight sections in ball valves results in a 3% loss in precision – that’s absolutely impossible

As mentioned above, a sufficient length of straight pipe segment does not necessarily ensure stable and accurate measurements, while an insufficient length does not necessarily result in unstable or inaccurate measurements. Refer to an example of measuring air flow in a 1.6-meter pipeline: 3 sections in front and 1 section behind, with elbows at both ends. Measurement using a certain type of gauge was stable but only fairly accurate; measurement using another type of gauge was also stable but only became fairly accurate after correction
In practical experience, a straight pipe section is necessary. I conducted experiments with this by installing a mass flow meter and an electromagnetic flow meter in the same pipeline; if there isn’t enough straight pipe section, the flow rate fluctuates, and adding more straight pipe section resolves the issue. As for you, check whether the flow meter shows fluctuations; if there are no fluctuations, keep using it as is, and if there are fluctuations, make the necessary adjustments.
It would be best to have the manufacturer come to the site for adjustments; I’m not sure what type of flow meter you are using
We have a turbine here; 2D on the front and 1D on the back is sufficient
