According to media reports, on May 23, John Nash, the 86-year-old renowned economist, founder of game theory, and Nobel Prize winner, along with his 82-year-old wife, were killed in a car accident on a toll highway in New Jersey, United States, while riding in a taxi. Local police said that John Nash and his wife were not wearing seat belts, and they were thrown out of the car at the time of the accident. Once the news was reported by the media, people couldn’t help but sigh with regret. There have been countless tragedies caused by the improper use of seat belts. The lessons of bloodshed show that not wearing a seat belt is one of the major causes of road traffic deaths. On May 15, a bus crash occurred in Chunhua County, Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province, resulting in the sudden loss of 35 lives. Among the notices issued by the Safety Committee Office of the State Council, the most distressing one is the improper use of seat belts. It was initially found that only a very small number of seats on the accident-stricken bus were equipped with seat belts. Statistics from the Ministry of Public Security show that wearing seat belts can reduce the death rate in front-end collisions by 57%, in side collisions by 44%, and in rollovers by 80%. A seat belt is truly a life belt. Recently, the State Council’s Safety Committee has also issued directives to carry out comprehensive initiatives such as safety oaths for drivers and special campaigns titled “Seat Belts – Lifelines.” By using typical accident cases as examples, warning education will be conducted on a wide scale, so that the lessons learned from these accidents can be used to improve safety measures and prevent similar accidents from occurring again. Take traffic lights at crossroads for example: the law states that one should stop at red lights and go at green lights, but how many people actually follow this rule strictly? What these people think is that cars won’t dare to hit them; however, Chinese law stipulates that in the event of a collision between a car and a pedestrian, the car bears 100% responsibility regardless of the cause. This legal framework essentially allows pedestrians to violate traffic rules.
