Dry gas seals are generally used in centrifugal compressors
Compressors typically use dry gas seals for sealing, which are a type of mechanical seal. Since compressors usually operate at high speeds, Archimedes spiral grooves are carved into the stationary ring of the dry gas seal. Clean nitrogen gas under a certain stable pressure is used as an isolating gas; as the compressor shaft rotates, this gas enters the space between the stationary and rotating rings, forming high-pressure areas in the spiral grooves. These high pressures keep the two rings separated by a certain distance, creating an air film. As a result, there is no contact between the rotating and stationary rings during operation, hence no friction, allowing for stable operation over extended periods of time. Typically, dry gas seals are equipped with an auxiliary nitrogen control system for sealing purposes, and the cost of this system is usually much higher than that of the dry gas seal itself.
