I don’t know much about boilers, so I’m seeking help with a few issues that are bothering me. The steam source for our natural gas-to-methanol project comes from 3×170t/h gas boilers, which use natural gas as fuel; the steam produced is superheated at 6.4 MPa and 370°C. The boilers are arranged in a two-in-use-one-backup configuration; is the backup unit in a cold standby state or a hot standby state? Is steam generated in the hot standby mode? If a boiler fails, how long does it take to replace it with a backup boiler until steam of the required quality is produced? Will there be enough time?
The key to this issue lies in the maintenance cycle of the boiler; the poster can use them alternately to give the boiler some time for maintenance. Of course, if the boiler is used in a hot standby mode, costs need to be taken into consideration. With a cold backup, it’s difficult to address sudden issues.
This also depends on your steam load, as well as the frequency at which backup boilers are activated in case of an accident.
Ultimately, it depends on the accident situation; generally, a design with two active units and one standby unit is used, and a cold standby unit is acceptable.
Cold standby means it’s there after being repaired! What does hot standby mean? How exactly does it work?
May I ask which boiler manufacturer you are using, and how is its performance? We are planning to use a gas steam boiler here
