Recently, the factory has been facing financial difficulties, and the owner wants to replace the carrier gas (N2) and air used in the chromatograph with instrument air from the factory itself as well as N2 produced by the factory’s air separation unit (previously, bottled gas was used). I have analyzed the oxygen content in the factory’s nitrogen; it is less than 10 ppm. The water content in the instrument air is around 25 ppm, while the air contains some hydrocarbons such as methane, in amounts not exceeding 20 ppm. The gas chromatograph used is an Agilent 7890A, with detectors including FID, TCD, and FPD. Do any of you have experience in changing the gas source? Are there any particular things that need to be taken into consideration? I would appreciate it if you could share your insights. reward_7ree
In my small air analysis laboratory, I use bottled reference gases; I personally think that the investment required for modifications isn’t really that significant in terms of cost savings
It can be modified: 1. Check whether the purity of N2 produced by the air separation unit in the factory meets the requirements; 2. Filter out impurities and moisture before using gas chromatography; 3. Install pressure control valves before the main pipeline in the testing laboratory to maintain stable pressure
Could you be more detailed? What specific parameters are involved for nitrogen and instrument air in air separation?
What substance do you need to measure? For general measurements, your gas source can be used directly; however, if measuring trace hydrocarbons, the air needs to be purified.
This is feasible; long-term use helps save costs. Here, we have replaced bottled N2 with our own N2 pipeline system, and a filter-regulator valve is installed before the gas enters the system
