LNG = Liquified Natural Gas, which is liquefied at -162 degrees Celsius. Once vaporized, its volume increases by 600 times. While studying iron-nickel alloys, Guillaume accidentally discovered that their coefficient of thermal expansion was extremely low; he then conducted research on the entire series of such alloys, which led to the discovery of Invar alloy, Elinvar alloy, and several other useful alloys. People quickly realized the usefulness of Invar alloy, which was used in rapid methods for measuring base lines. This alloy is also widely used in precision instruments, such as for manufacturing the pendulums of thermometers and astronomical clocks. Guillaume also used Eilinwa alloy hairsprings to create fully compensated pendulums in high-end watches and precision clocks, eliminating secondary errors. The special properties of Invar steel make it an essential material in the shipbuilding industry for constructing large LNG carriers, as it prevents cold cracking of the ship’s structure in ultra-low temperature environments. Moreover, Invar is extremely delicate; a 0.7mm thick piece of Invar will rust through within 24 hours if touched with bare hands, so extreme care must be taken during welding! Therefore, during the welding of Invar steel, the highest level of welders is required – namely G-level skilled welders – who must work in extremely harsh conditions while wearing special leather sweat-absorbing gloves.
What kind of medium is used in large tanks made of such easily corroding material?
LNG, liquefied natural gas, at temperatures below -162 degrees.
The documentary “Mighty Machinery of a Great Nation” mentioned that Invar steel is used on the inner side of the compartments of large LNG carriers.
I saw it during the construction of an LNG ship. It’s all that shipyard in Shanghai.
It’s worth taking a look at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard if you get the chance; it’s where LNG ships are built
Strangers may not have the opportunity to go in and take a look, especially for such advanced projects. I used to work at a shipyard before.
@liujia1987, Fish Boss, who is that? You can call me Lao Wang, Xiao Ming, or Xiami Wang. . .
It is said that if a single inspection fails, the entire batch must be reworked. The welders required for this work need to be extremely meticulous. According to a documentary, all the Invar steel welders working on LNG ships at Hudong are young women, and they must undergo psychological assessments before starting work. They are not allowed to work if they experience psychological distress due to things like breakups, menstruation, or family issues. Moreover, there is a set limit on the amount of welding each person can do per day – they cannot exceed it, only reduce it
