Previously, the safety device on the top of our company’s 98% acid tank became clogged, preventing the 98% acid from returning to the tank; as a result, it spilled and flowed down along the edges of the tank. Now the question is: can we use welding to cut through it directly? The concern is that hydrogen gas might be present, posing a risk of explosion. Additionally, since the safety device on the top of the tank became clogged, it has not been in use, which also poses certain risks. Although nitrogen pipes are provided, this is on the condition that nitrogen is not used. I was wondering if any of the experts have experience in this area; thank you for sharing!

If it gets blocked and cannot be repaired, then just replace the breathing valve. When cutting, try to avoid spreading the internal medium everywhere; carry out bottom cleaning and replacement, then take samples for analysis to determine whether the conditions for working with fire are met; otherwise, work with fire is not allowed.

In areas with very high hydrogen concentrations, it is absolutely forbidden to start welding work blindly; the area must be purged and its conditions verified to be satisfactory before welding can proceed. It’s not acceptable for the safety device to remain blocked for a long time.
