For high-purity hydrogen used in gas chromatographs, which is better: a hydrogen generator or a hydrogen cylinder? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
It’s better to use gas cylinders; the gas in those cylinders has had some tiny solid particles removed, things like PM2.5 and such, you know what I mean. Gas chromatography has high requirements for these gases, so it is better to use them in bottled form. It seems that gases such as nitrogen and hydrogen are generally used in high purity, which allows interference to be reduced to a minimum, almost to the point of being negligible during testing
For large-scale use of compressed gas, it is recommended to use compressed gas cylinders for supply. If a large amount of gas is required, multiple cylinders connected in parallel can be considered; this provides better stability, ensures higher quality of the gas, eliminates waiting time before gas is available, and makes it easier to obtain the gas supply. If there is only one or two chromatographs, either cylinder-based gas supply or a gas generator can be chosen. Gas generators generally cannot provide a gas source at high pressure. Some other gas generators also need to be dried, and they are troublesome to maintain.
