Industrially, sulfuryl chloride is produced by the catalytic reaction of chlorine gas and sulfur dioxide in tubular fixed-bed reactors, at a reaction temperature of around sixty to seventy degrees Celsius; currently, ceramic reaction tubes are used in most of these installations. The question now is: are there any other materials available for reaction tubes, such as metal, glass-lined, or glass? Was the choice of ceramic reaction tubes for this process accidental or inevitable? Has anyone tried reaction tubes made of other materials? Which brand offers the best quality ceramic reaction tubes these days? Please share your opinions, and wild guesses are welcome.
I think quartz reactors should be quite suitable.
Commercial chlorine gas. Normal water content is in the range of several dozen PPM; if you’re concerned, it can be dried further with concentrated sulfuric acid.
Why aren’t your graphite devices recommended?

The reason graphite is not recommended is the lack of past application examples for this technology; it’s not that graphite cannot be used at all. If you are interested, I can provide graphite specimens for testing the suitability of impervious graphite materials under these process conditions. The test results and related parameters need to be shared.
Carbon steel or stainless steel is used for the material, and the reaction tube is coated with PTFE; F40 or F30 will do, which refers to polytetrafluoroethylene.
What is the coating thickness? What is the thermal conductivity?
Thickness 1mm, thermal conductivity of F30 is 0.14 w/m.k, and that of F40 is 0.24 w/m.k.
It’s very attractive. What’s the price? Is it more expensive or less expensive compared to glass-lined tubes? Are there any limitations in terms of usage?

It resists most chemical agents, can withstand temperatures up to 200 degrees, and tolerates a wide range of pH levels, with no limitations in terms of usage.
