As the title indicates, the solvent specified in GB/T 260, Method for Determining Water Content in Petroleum Products, is industrial solvent oil or the fraction of straight-run gasoline with a boiling point above 80 degrees Celsius. I would like to ask everyone: are there any specific specifications for this industrial solvent oil? Which one does everyone use? Thank you!
GB 260 is an older and less accurate method; for low water contents, especially those below 0.05% (it seems to be 0.05%, I’m not entirely sure), it can only provide semi-quantitative results indicating trace amounts. The moisture content in ordinary oils is generally below 0.05% (500 ppm); Karl Fischer titration or Karl Fischer titration with electricity is the best method, as it provides accurate and reliable results while requiring only a small amount of sample. As for the distillation solution used in GB260, for light oils, it may already be a solvent on its own; there are no specific requirements regarding the addition of other solvents, and generally, its boiling point should be around that of water. In my previous laboratory, for such tasks, petroleum ether at 60–90 degrees was generally used; for samples with a slightly higher boiling point, toluene (or reformed oil) was also employed. However, the water content in the solvent can also have a certain impact on the measurement results, especially when its water content is very low, as the solvent itself may dissolve some of the water present in the sample into itself.
