After receiving the company’s notice to reduce production capacity, the nitrochlorobenzene workshop reduced the amount of chlorobenzene fed into the nitration unit from 7 cubic meters to 5 cubic meters. 18 hours later, emulsification of the material occurred in the circulating nitrator, and this emulsified material entered the subsequent four nitration reactors. In the nitrocellulose separator, it is difficult for the waste acid and the material to separate into layers; when the emulsified material enters the alkali washing tank, it prevents the alkali washing process from bringing the material to a moderately alkaline level. After the operators detected this issue, management ordered the nitration reactor to be shut down and all feedings to be stopped. It was only after allowing the mixture to stand for one and a half hours that the emulsified material disappeared.
