When producing barium acetate, we use barium carbonate to react with acetic acid, which generates a lot of foam and significantly reduces the efficiency of the reaction vessel. We are considering adding an antifoaming agent, but are worried about introducing new impurities. After researching, we found that ethanol can be used as an antifoaming agent; it can evaporate during the subsequent concentration process without affecting the quality of our product. I would like to ask, how effective is ethanol as an antifoaming agent? What is the range of dosage?
Ethanol has a certain defoaming effect, but it does not have an antifoaming effect; therefore, its use is not recommended. It is suggested to try Dow Corning’s compound-based defoamers, with a dosage of around 0.1%. If you are interested, feel free to contact me privately~
There are many types of defoamers, each with different properties! Ethanol can be used as an antifoaming agent, but whether it can solve your problem needs to be tested; there is no data specific to this process! If your product involves a washing step in the subsequent processing, you might consider using polyether or polyether-modified silicone defoamers!
