When a steam turbine is in operation, moisture absorption can cause leakage at the turbine shaft seals, resulting in a certain amount of water in the oil. Metal particles generated by wear in the system, rust produced by corrosion of the system’s pipes, and dust from the air all contribute to the presence of particulate impurities in the oil. A small amount of water in the oil can lead to corrosion of metals within the oil system; the resulting rust particles further accelerate wear and generate more impurities. When the water content in the oil exceeds its solubility limit, the oil becomes emulsified, which affects its lubricating properties. Both water and particulate impurities not only speed up the oxidation of the oil but also cause foaming, the formation of sludge, and thus impair the separation of air from the oil, creating a vicious cycle of oil oxidation.
