Yesterday I passed by an ultrasonic testing area; it wasn’t clear whether testing was being done on spherical tanks or storage tanks. I was about 10 meters away from the testing site. Today I asked the staff what kind of ultrasonic testing equipment was used yesterday, and they replied that a Toft ultrasonic tester was used. Can spherical tanks and cylindrical storage tanks be inspected using ultrasonic testers? Does using X-rays have a significant impact on the body?
TOFD is fine – it’s a type of ultrasound. As for X-rays, as long as the distance is sufficient and the exposure time isn’t too long, there should be no problem. If you’re still worried, you can use a survey meter to check; a level of 2.5 milliSv or less represents a safe distance.
There is something called a personal dosimeter, which provides protection against radiation through time-based protection, distance-based protection, and physical protection. What’s special here is that distance is the easiest to achieve. . . It is inversely proportional to the square of the distance. . . For example, if you increase it by a factor of 2, the radiation dose received is reduced to 1/4. .
A survey meter and a personal dosimeter are two different things; the operator carries both the personal dosimeter and the alarm device, and the personal dosimeter is sent to the environmental protection agency every year to determine whether the annual radiation dose received exceeds the allowed limit.
The diffraction time-of-flight ultrasonic testing technique (TOFD method) is now widely used for the non-destructive testing of pressure vessels. As for the potential harm of radiation to the human body, it is important to prevent radiation damage; therefore, a certain safety distance must be maintained – generally, 30 meters or more is required~~
