What happens if the pre-pump in a vacuum system has a higher pumping speed than the main pump?
What is mentioned here refers to the theoretical pumping speed; when the inlet pressure of the preceding pump drops to a certain level, it will definitely continue to decrease. Otherwise, there’s no need for a main pump.
The pumping speed of the pre-pump has a maximum value; exceeding this value means waste... There are basically no other effects, but an excessively high value increases the amount of maintenance required
A higher pumping capacity of the pre-pump is certainly beneficial for the system, though it is a bit wasteful
