The hardness of the make-up water and the total alkalinity in our unit’s circulating water are high; is there anyone experienced who can help solve this problem? I have two ideas: softening the hardness by using quicklime, but there’s no place to dispose of the slaked lime that is produced, so figuring out how to deal with it is a problem. To reduce alkalinity, acid can be added; is concentrated sulfuric acid suitable?
1. It can be treated with slaked lime, stored in sealed tanks to prevent environmental pollution, and the resulting sludge is compressed into mud cakes using a filter press. Lime treatment can remove both hardness and alkalinity simultaneously.
2. It is also possible to use a weakly alkaline bed to remove hardness, and then use a carbon remover to eliminate alkalinity; however, this method requires a large amount of acid and results in higher operating costs
3. The H-Na parallel softening process can also be employed.

It is necessary to check the values of alkalinity and hardness; if the sum of alkalinity and hardness is below 1500, no adjustment is required, and a corrosion and scale inhibition agent resistant to high hardness can be used directly. Feel free to contact me if you need anything.
