The general contractor handles the detailed design, while we are responsible for the processing design. As per the contract, our scope of work also includes engineering. The detailed design drawings provided by the general contractor include ISO diagrams and bracket diagrams. We will provide the pipe section drawings and bracket fabrication drawings. I’m facing this issue now: the dimensions of the pipe boots specified in the drawings provided by the general contractor do not match those of the door frame structure (which have been determined in the general contractor’s structural drawings); there is a difference of 4 millimeters, which makes installation impossible. We request the general contractor to issue a subcontractor instruction sheet for making changes to the structural design. The general contractor believes that such dimensional conflicts fall within the scope of engineering, rather than design. Engineering should be solved by us ourselves. May I ask in what standards or documents is the definition of engineering provided, and are there explanations regarding the boundary between engineering and design? Thank you!
Take a closer look at your contract interface! The process design is obligated to investigate and point out errors, deviations, and non-compliance with standards that occur in the detailed design.
The contract does indeed include the task of “Checking and validation”. But now, we have pointed out this error, yet the general contractor refuses to issue a written document for making the corrections. The key point is that the general contractor does not acknowledge this as part of the design work.

The design is relatively rough, focusing mainly on the definition and arrangement of functions; engineering, on the other hand, is more detailed, requiring consideration of the feasibility, implementability, and safety of the engineering solutions
