Suction process: The refrigeration compressor in a single-screw chiller is driven by a screw rotor, which drives two star wheels that are meshed with it. As the screw and the star wheels move relative to each other, gas is drawn into the screw grooves. When the teeth of the star wheels enter these grooves and rotate until the volume of those grooves is separated from the suction chamber, the suction process is complete. This is how the refrigeration compressor in a single-screw chiller functions during the suction stage. 2. Compression process: As the screw continues to rotate, the volume of gas within the screw’s grooves gradually decreases, causing the gas pressure to rise. This continues until the gas in the grooves is about to come into contact with the exhaust port, at which point the gas compression is complete. This is the compression process of a screw-type refrigeration compressor. 3. Exhausting process: When the tooth groove is connected to the exhaust port, exhaust begins, and this continues until the star wheel has swept through all the screw tooth grooves and all the gas in those grooves has been expelled; this is the exhausting process. Unlike twin-screw compressors, in single-screw compressors used in chillers, the star wheels arranged symmetrically on both sides of the rotor form two separate working chambers, each of which carries out the processes of suction, compression, and exhaust. As a result, one basic volume of a single-screw compressor undergoes two cycles of suction, compression, and exhaust during one full rotation. Single-screw compressors also use slide valves for energy regulation, allowing for stepless adjustment of capacity within the range of 10% to 100%.
