For the regular drainage of the waste heat boiler in the reprocessing unit, we usually carry out it once per shift, for about 1 minute each time, with the criterion being not to affect the level of liquid in the steam drum. The fixed discharge valve is a gate valve, and it is opened two or three notches each time. Today, I heard from my colleagues that in their previous boiler system, the drain valves were kept in the fully open position; their drain valves were ball valves. I’d like to ask everyone: should the control valve be fully open when setting the schedule?

During the training on pressure vessels, I heard from the instructor that there are two ways to carry out regular sewage discharge: one is a quick-opening method, and the other is continuous discharge over an extended period of time (usually around 20 minutes). For quick opening, ball valves are generally used to open quickly in order to discharge the impurities from the waste heat boiler at high flow rates; this method usually takes very little time, and it is possible to carry out several such discharges intermittently. Over a long period of time, it involves low-volume discharge for an extended duration, with generally low flow rates. The method to be used can be decided by the workshop.

I won’t discuss the sequential arrangement. As for the simultaneous arrangement, whether to keep all valves open or not depends on the piping configuration. Generally, the valve cores in this type of setup are prone to damage from high-pressure boiler water; therefore, it’s best to keep all valves open if there is only one valve in place. For two valves, the valve that is closer to the equipment should be kept fully open during regular discharge, while the second valve can be used to control the discharge flow rate; any setting will work. Once the process is complete, both valves should be closed completely. In this way, if the second valve fails, the first valve can act as a barrier, facilitating replacement.
