May I ask everyone, how is steam used in the bottom reboiler of your towers? That is, is the control valve for regulating the steam volume installed at the steam inlet or outlet? In our unit, the control valve for the steam in the reboiler is installed at the inlet, while a steam trap is installed at the outlet. We consulted the design institute, and they said there’s no problem, but I’m still a bit uneasy. I’d like to get everyone’s opinion. Considering energy savings, which method is better?
No problem. Don’t overthink it. The prerequisite for energy savings is to meet production demands, and a steam trap is an energy-saving device. If the heating effect is not good, consider removing the steam trap element
There are posts that have discussed this; controlling the air intake is fine, and the steam trap works properly when it’s in good condition, but not necessarily if it’s damaged. The water output can also be controlled; some models are equipped with a level gauge for the condensate water, and automatic drainage is available as well.
One method involves installing control valves on the steam inlet pipeline, another involves installing them on the condensate outlet pipeline, and yet another involves installing control valves on both the steam pipeline and the condensate pipeline. Our device uses all three of these approaches, and they all work well for control purposes. The control strategies vary slightly depending on the process flow; if the design institute says it’s fine, then there’s definitely no problem.
Our reboiler’s control valve for steam is also installed at the reboiler inlet; there is a condensate tank at the outlet, and the condensate is recycled back to the power plant. It operates smoothly and reliably.

Everything is designed based on the specifics of your process. Generally, in projects where the cost is a concern, people opt for installing self-regulating valves at the inlet of the steam trap, which helps save space. Additionally, some organizations choose to replace steam traps with condensate tanks in order to reduce energy consumption; this can result in significant savings on water costs over time, as steam traps do have the tendency to leak fluid. There are mainly two approaches for outlet control: one involves using superheated steam, as there is no level gauge on the reboiler, and the resulting steam can still be utilized further; obviously, downstream users prefer this option. The other approach involves installing a level gauge on the reboiler, allowing for heating with saturated steam; another advantage of this method is that it enables control over the heat exchange area of the heat exchanger. I think this is a great feature
