What is the principle behind the oil absorption tower used for olefin separation? Is it related to Raoult’s law? To address this, we use propane to absorb ethylene in order to reduce losses. Are there any specific technical formulas available for reference?
According to the principle of like dissolves like, both absorption and distillation are governed by the principles of gas-liquid equilibrium, with Raoult’s and Henry’s laws serving as the foundations.

Both propane and ethylene are non-polar substances. How can the polarities be different? High-carbon absorption and low-carbon absorption both rely on the principle of absorption (it’s definitely impossible to use low-carbon to absorb high-carbon); the principle of absorption can be understood by studying chemical engineering principles. It’s the difference in solubility. Propane is a solvent; of course, hydrocarbons with more carbon atoms than propane, such as butane, can also be used. However, the choice of solvent depends on the separation process – if there are no columns for removing heavier components like butane, it is more appropriate to use propane.
I don’t think so; I’ve never heard of such a claim. If propane is a polar molecule, then its polarity is also very weak. Moreover, even polar molecules can be used as solvents. The key lies in the difference in solubility of the components to be separated.
