Why is hydroxylamine hydrochloride used instead of ascorbic acid in the o-phenanthroline method for measuring iron content in industrial circulating water? Is there any difference?
There’s nothing special about it; ascorbic acid and hydroxylamine are both strong reducing agents, and their role is to reduce ferric iron to ferrous iron for measurement. It’s just that the people who developed the methods may have referred to different materials at the time; the effects of these two reducing agents are the same.
