The steel grade is 16Mn. What do each digit and letter represent? What does the number 16 at the beginning mean?
This grade is already outdated; it is now called Q345. 16 represents the carbon content in ten-thousandths, while Mn indicates that the manganese content is less than 1%.

However, Q345 steel replaces various older grades such as 12MnV, 14MnNb, 18Nb, 16MnRE, and 16Mn, rather than just replacing the 16Mn steel alone. 16 indicates that the carbon content, expressed as a ten-thousandth, is 0.1%-0.25%; in general it is around 0.16%, which is 16 per ten thousand, and that’s why it is commonly referred to as 16Mn.
May I ask, is Mn one of the harmful elements? Are they still beneficial elements?
Here, Mn is used as a beneficial element; compared to Q245 grades, the addition of Mn increases the strength.
