For example, in the middle section of the cylinder, when subjected to internal pressure, it can expand without any obstruction; this is a non-self-limiting behavior. At the junction between the cylinder and the end cap, however, since the expansion amount of the end cap differs from that of the cylinder, the less expansive part limits the expansion of the more expansive part, and they reach a stable state due to this mutual restriction – this is self-limiting behavior
The primary stress caused by external loads is non-self-limiting, whereas the secondary stress that arises to ensure deformation compatibility is self-limiting; both the magnitude and distribution of this stress remain within certain limits
