There is a converter with a diameter of 3600, a design pressure of 1.5 MPa, and a design temperature of 475. Based on calculations, the thickness of the cylinder wall is 26 mm, with 7 mm of stainless steel welded onto the inner surface. Most converters I’ve seen have spherical end caps – why are spherical end caps used? Was it because the pressure changes were high in the past, and spherical heads were chosen to reduce the thickness, or were they used to ensure even distribution? The pressure change this time is relatively low; can an elliptical head be used? Have the experts in the group seen transformers with elliptical heads?
I’ve never seen it… Generally, even when the pressure is at its lowest, it’s still above 4 megapascals, and the thickness is also considerable; that’s why ball seals are used. As for whether an oval head can be used, if it’s feasible from a technical standpoint, there should be no problem
Elliptical end caps can be used; high-pressure vessels generally use spherical end caps, though elliptical end caps are also employed.
Although this device has a relatively large diameter, the pressure is not high, so an elliptical head can be used. However, due to the high temperature in the converter and the need to weld stainless steel, a spherical head is preferable to ensure even stress distribution. Although it is not theoretically prohibited to use high-voltage equipment without an elliptical seal, in practice no one uses it.
