A new reboiler has been installed in the methanol-water separation tower, and it was just put into use. Currently, the pressure difference remains below 10 kPa. The temperature at various points cannot be controlled properly: when the amount of steam used is low, the temperature doesn’t rise; when more steam is used, the temperature rises sharply. The temperatures at the tower bottom, the sensitive plate, and other points remain low. Later, the amount of steam was increased to around 4.7 tons, which is about one ton more than usual. After several fluctuations, the temperature reached around 135 degrees. During these fluctuations, the temperatures at all points increase, and the only adjustments that can be made are to the feed rate, the amount of steam, and the liquid level as well as the reflux rate. What are the characteristics of the tower when it’s empty or full? How can this be determined? How should adjustments be made during temperature fluctuations? What are the methods for adjusting direct steam supply?
We have been using cascade control, but the feed is unstable; the temperature of the sensitive plate fluctuates between 129 and 135. However, the overall separation performance is good, so we generally don’t pay much attention to controlling it. Direct steam supply has not been used yet up to now
