When using resin exchangers for softening and desalination, weak acid or weak base resins are sometimes employed. The books state that weak-type resins should be regenerated in a forward flow manner; I’m not sure why. Could anyone with expertise explain this?

There’s probably no need for such a distinction. For the regeneration of weak acid or weak base resins, both forward flow and reverse flow methods can be used. In water treatment, weak acid resins are generally used in floating bed or two-chamber beds; in the case of floating beds, regeneration takes place with water flowing in from above and out from below, which is still considered reverse flow regeneration. In two-chamber beds, whether it’s weak acid or weak base resins, they are located in the upper chamber, and regeneration again occurs from bottom to top, thus it is also reverse flow regeneration. The term \"regeneration with the current\" they mention is likely due to the fact that weak acid and weak base resins have a relatively large expansion rate during transformation; however, this factor can be ignored. In water treatment, the actual expansion rate for weak acids and weak bases during transformation is relatively small, indicating that the transformation is not complete. We have encountered many weak resin tanks with backflow regeneration.
