On September 27, 2016, it was reported that the project titled \"Technology for the Production of Coal-Based High-Density Military Aviation Fuel\", which falls under the advanced energy technology category of the 863 Program and was undertaken by China Shenhua Coal-to-Oil Chemical Co., Ltd., has passed the evaluation. Based on Shenhua’s direct coal liquefaction process and equipment, this project conducts research on the characteristics of directly liquefied coal products, which are described as \"one high and three highs plus four lows\" (high specific gravity, high thermal stability, high volumetric calorific value, high specific heat capacity, low freezing point, low sulfur, low nitrogen, and low aromatics content). The focus of the research is on overcoming key technical challenges, such as the determination and evaluation of the critical performance indicators for coal-based jet fuels with high specific gravity, as well as the production processes and operating conditions required for such fuels. Coal-based high-density jet fuel products were successfully developed using the direct coal liquefaction process; an evaluation system for coal-based jet fuel was established; industrial pilot production of such fuel was carried out; and it passed engine bench tests. The aircraft used coal-based jet fuel produced through direct coal liquefaction technology and successfully completed its first test flight.
