Many of my friends tend to determine the location of a university just by looking at its name; indeed, Peking University is in Beijing and Chongqing University is in Chongqing. But to rely solely on the name to make such judgments is too naive. For candidates who are concerned about location and city, they must keep a close eye when applying to the schools listed below. Although Hebei University of Technology is a 211 university in Hebei Province, it shouldn’t be assumed that it must be located there; it is now a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the people of Hebei Province, and the people of Tianjin City (a university developed with the support of the province, city, and ministry). It is located in Tianjin proper, and it is the only 211 university in the country to operate outside its home province. The predecessor of this school was the Beiyang Institute of Arts and Crafts, located in the Gongyuan area in the southeast corner of Tianjin. Before becoming a direct-controlled municipality, Tianjin was the capital of Hebei Province; therefore, several universities from Hebei were established in Tianjin. Later, in 1967, Tianjin became a direct-controlled municipality, and many universities that were originally located in Tianjin moved to cities such as Shijiazhuang and Baoding; only a few schools remained in Tianjin. After the reform and opening up, Hebei Province hoped to relocate Hefei University of Water Resources and Electric Engineering back to Langfang in Hebei. However, due to various factors such as the many historic sites on campus that are over 100 years old, Grandpa Deng Xiaoping granted a special permission allowing the university to remain in Tianjin. This is what made today’s students vaguely think that it belongs to Hebei. 2. How can one ignore Sichuan International Studies University and Sichuan Fine Arts Institute? As the saying goes, \"Sichuan and Chongqing are one family,\" and their cultures are often closely interconnected. Just like the names of these two universities, when one sees the characters for \"Sichuan\", doesn’t one subconsciously classify them as institutions based in Sichuan? The people of Chongqing are not happy about this; these two universities are truly institutions based in Chongqing! Sharing the same fate as Hebei University of Technology, Chongqing was also under the jurisdiction of Sichuan before it became a direct-controlled municipality in 1997. After doing some research, I learned that due to historical changes, some schools started operating in different locations, ultimately resulting in schools with the same name being established in various places. This is also something important to keep in mind when applying for college programs! Trap! 1. China University of Mining and Technology. These two universities are located in Xuzhou and Beijing respectively, and this is due to their complex historical backgrounds. China University of Mining and Technology traces its origins back to the Jiaozuo Road and Mining School, founded in 1909. According to statistics, the university has moved locations 14 times throughout its history, having been situated in Henan, Jiangsu, Tianjin, Beijing, Sichuan and other places, before finally settling in Xuzhou. Due to historical changes, the school’s main campus in Xuzhou and its campus in Beijing have gradually evolved into two separate educational entities. At China University of Mining and Technology in Xuzhou, no suffix is needed; the one located in Beijing is called China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing). 2. In 1953, New China established its first petroleum-related higher education institution – Beijing Petroleum Institute. In 1969, it was moved from Beijing to Yingkou in Shandong Province and renamed North China Petroleum University, thanks to the exploitation of the Shengli Oil Field at that time. Later, a graduate school was established in Beijing. As it developed over time, Beijing and Shandong began to operate their educational institutions separately, eventually giving rise to the two schools with the same name but located in different places that we know today. 3. China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) (Beijing) The same situation occurred at China University of Geosciences as well; not only is there a campus in Wuhan, but there is also one in Beijing. Similar to China University of Petroleum, China University of Geosciences was first established in Beijing; it was later moved to Hubei during the chaos of the Cultural Revolution. In 1975, its location was fixed in Wuhan. In 1987, the Education Commission approved the renaming of Wuhan Institute of Geology to China University of Geosciences, with campuses in both Wuhan and Beijing, the headquarters being located in Wuhan. Third, “China” is not the exclusive property of Beijing. University of Science and Technology of China – This is a truly renowned university. As a result, it was necessary to relocate to Anhui in 1969, where it settled in Hefei and began to recover from then on. In September 1975, upon consultation with the State Council, the Chinese Academy of Sciences decided that the University of Science and Technology of China should be under the leadership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences rather than primarily under the leadership of Anhui Province. USTC has always been one of the **universities receiving key development support; it is a school with great prospects for development. China Medical University: The reason this university is located in Shenyang, Liaoning, is closely related to the fact that the Northeast was among the first regions to be liberated. China Medical University is one of the earliest institutions established in China; it was founded in November 1931 in Ruijin, Jiangxi, as the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army Medical School and the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army Health School. The school is the only institution that completed the entire 25,000-li Long March on behalf of a school and continued to operate during the march. In 1948, the entire Northeast region was the first to be liberated, and China Medical University was subsequently moved to Shenyang, where it has remained ever since. 3. Ocean University of China The Ocean University of China is located in Qingdao, thanks to the city’s unique geographical location. It wasn’t until 2002, when the school was permitted to change its name, that it became what we now know as Ocean University of China. In addition, there is the Civil Aviation University of China in Tianjin, the China Pharmaceutical University in Nanjing, the China Academy of Art and the China Jiliang University in Hangzhou, as well as the Civil Aviation Flight University of China in Deyang. Of course, there are even more schools that are named after a province but are not located in the provincial capital.
