The vortex swirl flow meter is a sensor that is widely used today in industries such as petroleum, chemicals, power generation, metallurgy, and urban gas supply for measuring the flow rate of various gases. To use a vortex swirl flow meter correctly, it is necessary to follow these five requirements in order to ensure accurate measurements. I. Instrument selection is extremely important. Once the type of flow sensor has been chosen, it becomes crucial to select the specifications of that flow sensor as well as the associated components. In a word, choose well to use it well. To this end, two basic principles should be adhered to during the selection process: first, to ensure the accuracy of use, and second, to ensure production safety. To achieve this, three selection parameters must be determined, namely the maximum, minimum, and typical instantaneous flow rates in the short and long terms, the design pressure of the medium being measured, and the operating pressure. II. Perform pre-use calibration On the one hand, this is due to the various difficulties currently associated with the on-site calibration of such flow sensors. Furthermore, if the intention behind purchasing such a flow sensor is to use it in relatively important measurement applications, such as high-volume trade measurements or measurement points where disputes are common, and if the installation site does not have the facilities for online calibration of flow rates, then it would be premature to conclude that all the performance parameters of the flow sensor are satisfactory based solely on the factory certification provided by the manufacturer at the time of purchase. Therefore, to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the measurement results of the flow sensor in its future operation, it is necessary to send the sensor to a department with the capability and qualifications for such calibration before its official installation, so as to conduct a system calibration across the entire range of flow rates. III. Proper installation in the process system Although this type of flow sensor does not have many specific requirements regarding its installation or the operating environment, all types of flow measurement instruments share certain common requirements: it is necessary to avoid vibrations and high-temperature conditions that could interfere with the flow-measuring elements, to keep the inner walls of the straight sections before and after the sensor smooth and straight, and to ensure that the fluid being measured is a clean, single-phase fluid. IV. Strengthening post-operational management Although rotary vortex flowmeters possess various automatic handling functions and low power consumption, they still require enhanced management after being put into use. For example, to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the flow sensor over the long term, it is necessary to regularly calibrate the system, record the data from the meter, update the medium parameters, and periodically check the battery condition, as well as inspect the sensor’s coefficients and seals. V. Pay attention to internal maintenance If it is necessary to regularly inspect or clean the measurement chamber of the flow sensor and its components due to contamination or other reasons, one thing must be taken especially into account: for vortex flow sensors of the same specification, core components such as the vortex generator and guide vanes cannot be interchanged. Otherwise, it will be necessary to recalibrate the meter’s measurement coefficients and perform systematic adjustments to the temperature and pressure sensors attached to it. If these five requirements – the selection of flow sensors, their calibration, proper installation during the manufacturing process, subsequent management, and internal maintenance – are properly addressed, many problems will arise less often when using these sensors, which is particularly important for manufacturers that operate in continuous production mode.
