For taller vertical containers, when conducting a hydrostatic test (with the container in a vertical position), should the pressure reading be based on the gauge at the lowest point or at the highest point? Considering the pressure of the liquid column, the pressure should be higher at the bottom, but by our standards, gauges are installed at the top of the container. Please discuss this!

The concept of design pressure refers to the maximum pressure specified at the top of the container. The pressure required for the pressure resistance test is obtained by multiplying the design pressure by a certain coefficient, and this test pressure should also be the pressure at the top. When using SW6 for calculations, a maximum pressure allowed for the voltage withstand test is determined. If the test pressure plus the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid column is less than this value, it indicates that the system is safe. By the way, for spherical tanks, during the hydrostatic test, it is required to install a pressure gauge at both the top and bottom. However, the test pressure is based on the reading of the pressure gauge at the top of the spherical tank.
The pressure for the pressure test is determined by the design pressure (or maximum allowable operating pressure) and the design temperature; both the design pressure (and maximum allowable operating pressure) are defined as the highest pressure applied at the top of the container. Therefore, during the vertical container (upright installation) test, the pressure gauge used for reading should be installed at the top. At the same time, you can also install a comparative pressure gauge at the bottom for reference. When performing a hydrostatic test on a vertical container (in a horizontal position), the static pressure of the liquid column in the equipment must be added to the original test pressure; the test pressure must be adjusted accordingly before carrying out the hydrostatic test. (Of course, if the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid column is less than 5% of the design pressure, it can be ignored.)
