I have seen literature stating that the MELLAPAK metal plate corrugated packing, publicly introduced by Sulzer in 1977, is made by stamping various metal sheets with a thickness of 0.2 mm, with small holes having a diameter of 4 mm on them. The Intalox Structured packing developed by the American company Norton in the 1980s features perforated half-pieces with a special texture on their surface… Can this be interpreted as meaning that the plate corrugated packing originally developed by Sulzer had no texture and was smooth? No embossing? Has anyone seen any related reports or information?
Sulzer’s packing materials vary depending on the application: from 40Y and 64Y high-anti-clogging types (without drilling or surface treatment) to 125Y, 250Y, 350Y, and 500Y types, which all have surface treatment applied. Surface treatment not only increases the strength of the packing but also enhances the specific surface area for gas-liquid mass transfer as well as the efficiency of this transfer. Plate corrugated packing should be used in limited applications, such as oil-water separation and situations with high levels of fouling. The 40Y and 64Y corrugated packs do not have any surface treatment; Sulzer, on the other hand, applies a special treatment to the surface of its packing to improve its efficiency.
