What are the current technologies for oxygen-nitrogen separation to produce nitrogen (with a purity of 99%). Over 5%)? What are the features? What about the cost-effectiveness?
Currently, there are mainly three methods for industrial nitrogen production: cryogenic method; pressure swing adsorption (PSA) method; and gas membrane separation method. Among these three methods, the cryogenic method has the longest development history, followed by the PSA method, while the membrane separation method is a new type of nitrogen production technique that has been developed more recently. 1. Cryogenic method: This method requires a large amount of space, generates significant noise, involves high initial investment costs, high operating expenses, high electricity consumption, and has a complex process flow. It is also difficult to operate and maintain. After purification, the purity of the nitrogen can reach 99.999%, making it suitable for large-scale nitrogen production facilities. 2. PSA method (pressure swing adsorption): Compared to the cryogenic method, this method features a simpler process flow, easier equipment manufacturing, no need for colored metal materials, a compact design, less space requirement, lower initial investment costs, simple operation, and easy maintenance and management. The concentration of the produced nitrogen can be adjusted as needed, and the device has good adaptability. After purification, the nitrogen purity can reach 99.999%, making it suitable for small-scale nitrogen production facilities. 3. Gas membrane separation method: Compared to the first two methods, this approach requires less space and generates less noise. It has lower costs and electricity consumption, simpler equipment, and is easier to operate and maintain. It operates in a static manner, does not require a refrigeration dryer for dehydration, and does not pollute the environment. It is a high-tech technique that is developing rapidly.

Membrane separation seems not to be a suitable method for producing high-purity nitrogen. The key issue is that the separation efficiency required for industrial use isn’t high enough; if the separation performance isn’t adequate, the output volume will be too low, making this method unsuitable
