Can carbon steel WCB, cast steel valves, be used in the low-temperature conditions of winter in the northeast? In outdoor use environments where winter temperatures can drop to between -3 and -40°C, while the temperature of the fluid in question remains at normal levels, is it appropriate to use carbon steel valves in such conditions?
As long as it can be ensured that the temperature is below freezing, that’s sufficient.

Yes, as long as the medium flowing within the pipe is in motion and the temperature isn’t too low, it’s fine. If there’s a risk of freezing, electric heating tapes can be wrapped around the outside of the pipe, followed by insulation. Glass wool is a good choice for insulation material, but it’s said to be harmful to humans; however, it does provide much better insulation than rock wool or foam rubber made from silicoaluminate materials.
Then please check the manufacturer’s accompanying instructions or certificate; it indicates the applicable temperature range. Based on the local minimum temperature, the valve can be used as long as the temperature does not exceed the operating limit; if the temperature exceeds this limit, then a valve made of a different material type must be chosen

If the valve is insulated and the medium flows rapidly, then the temperature can be taken as that of the medium, and the valve can be used in such cases. If the valve is not insulated and the medium flows slowly, it is necessary to consider whether the operating temperature of the valve is close to the outdoor temperature. In that case, it’s not sufficient to simply use the lowest value of -40°C; instead, the average temperature of the coldest month should be used. Theoretically, a temperature higher than -29°C is sufficient for using this material

The minimum operating temperature for WCB is -29°C, which is not low enough to reach -40°C. 2. Although the temperature of your medium is at room temperature, it cannot be guaranteed that the valve will never drop below -29°C. 3. By using LCB, it is possible to reach -46°C, with only a minimal increase in cost – just a slight rise in the cost of conducting low-impact tests. 4. Choose LCB, as it meets the standards and is fully satisfactory. Why not do it?

It can actually be used in practice, as long as the medium does not freeze and solidify. But for safety, it’s better to choose one that can withstand low temperatures.
