I would like to ask the experts: how should one choose the surface finish for Asme BPE pipes? Is it related to the medium, or something else?
In the ASME BPE (Bioprocessing Equipment) standard, the choice of pipe surface finish is primarily related to the cleanliness requirements of the medium being transported through the pipe. This includes requirements for the purity and sterility of the medium. Typically, pipes used in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and other high-purity applications require a high level of surface finish. According to the ASME BPE standard, the polish level of the inner surface of pipes is classified into several grades, such as SF1, SF3, SF4, etc. SF1 is generally suitable for applications that only require standard cleanliness, whereas SF4 offers a higher level of polishing and is appropriate for applications that demand a sterile or ultra-clean environment. The choice of polishing degree should also take into account issues such as corrosion, deposition, and contamination that may occur during the manufacturing process, in order to ensure the long-term stable and safe operation of the pipeline system. When selecting a specific surface polishing grade, the properties of the medium (such as its corrosiveness and whether a sterile environment is required), the operating conditions of the process (such as temperature and pressure), as well as relevant regulatory and standard requirements, should be carefully considered. It is recommended to consult professionals or manufacturers to ensure that the chosen level of polish meets the requirements of a specific application. .
The Asme A270-BPE standard already includes polishing requirements, so no additional custom requirements are needed.
The tubing shall be Rath A270-BPE 316L tubing that meets requirements exceeding those specified in ASME BPE and ASTM A270 S2. All tubing will undergo 100% bore inspection, and its surface roughness will be certified to a maximum value of 20 µ-in Ra (0.5 µm) for the inner diameter and 30 µ-in Ra (0.8 µm) for the outer diameter, as per ASME/ANSI B46.1. The measurements are taken using a profilometer at an angle of 90 degrees to the main polishing direction, and the tube ends are designed to be suitable for orbital welding. The surface finish of both the inner and outer surfaces is already specified, so no selection is required. The same is true for domestic suppliers; once the BPE level is determined, the surface finish quality is also fixed.
