In November 2020, Sichuan Chengdu Qianli Jinke Technology Innovation Co., Ltd. and Yichang Western Chemical Co., Ltd. jointly invested in establishing Yichang Chengyuan Environmental Protection New Materials Co., Ltd. within the Yuanan Aerospace Power Materials Industrial Park, to build a phosphogypsum treatment facility with a capacity of 250 kt/a, thereby enabling the recycling of sulfur resources and the comprehensive utilization of calcium resources. Currently, the engineering design is underway, and the on-site geological survey for the installation has been completed. The ordering for the main equipment is 85% complete. It is planned to complete the trial operation and material feeding before National Day in 2021. This project utilizes several patented technologies owned by Chengdu Qianli Jinke Technology Innovation Co., Ltd.: pre-treatment of phosphogypsum (purification and non-thermodynamic water removal), raw material shaping, decomposition, and calcination for separation – thereby addressing the key issues of high energy consumption, low SO2 concentration, and unstable clinker quality. What’s confusing is that this is in itself a major environmental management project—addressing the huge amounts of phosphogypsum piled up! However, at the current policy level, it is hindered by broader environmental protection policies – **new projects for producing cement clinker are prohibited, which means that the total amount of cement clinker that can be produced is fixed. Regarding projects for dealing with phosphogypsum, a concession has been granted in the five provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Hubei, and Anhui: the transfer of cement clinker specifications is allowed. However, carrying out such a replacement of cement clinker specifications is both difficult and costly!

The decomposition of calcium sulfate (gypsum) to produce sulfuric acid and calcium oxide (lime) allows for better control over the production process; the price of lime is not low either, and its sales are smooth, eliminating the need for a batching system for clinker production.
That’s true, but the other substances (impurities) present in phosphogypsum reduce the CaO content of the lime product, and these impurities are indeed among the auxiliary materials used in the production of clinker. And removing those impurities does increase production costs, making it difficult to manage
