It is reported that Satellite Chemical’s 40,000-ton EAA production project is set to go into operation, which could lead to a reshaping of the global EAA market landscape. I. Product Definition: EAA, short for ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer, is a thermoplastic polymer formed through free-radical polymerization of ethylene and acrylic acid under high temperature and pressure. With an acrylic content of 2% to 20%, it possesses excellent adhesion, good heat-sealing properties, tear resistance, and moisture barrier capabilities. It offers greater thermal stability than EVA and tolerates a wider range of processing conditions; it is a non-corrosive, high-end specialty material. II. Core Features 1. Adhesiveness: Possesses excellent bonding strength to polar substrates such as metal, glass, and paper, and improves the dyeability and compatibility of materials ; 2. Heat-sealing property: Moderate heat-sealing temperature and excellent thermal stability, suitable for various packaging formation requirements ; 3. Mechanical properties: resistant to tearing and impact, good toughness, and not prone to damage during processing ; 4. Barrier properties: Excellent ability to block air and moisture, thereby extending the shelf life of downstream products ; 5. Environmental friendliness: Low toxicity, recyclable, in line with global trends toward carbon neutrality and green packaging ; 6. Plasticity: It can be extruded, blown into shape, or coated, making it suitable for various molding processes and enabling large-scale production. III. Main application areas: The packaging industry is the primary area of application: around 69% is used in the packaging sector, including food/pharmaceutical packaging films, composite flexible packaging, and aluminum foil extrusion composites, which account for over 40% of its total use ; Powder coating (about 10%), used for metal anti-corrosion coatings ; Hot melt adhesive (about 8%), focusing on heat-seal adhesives and water-based adhesives ; Wires and cables (about 5%), used for cable shielding and insulation layers; New energy/automotive sector (about 4%), including battery electrode separators and seals ; Other fields (about 4%), including photovoltaics, healthcare, construction, etc. IV. Market Situation 1. The global EAA production capacity is approximately 300,000 tons per year, with a production volume of 250,000 tons; the capacity utilization rate is 83%. The market is highly monopolized, with the top five companies together accounting for 90% of the market share. The global EAA market size was approximately 2.69 billion yuan in 2024, and it is expected to reach nearly 3.96 billion yuan by 2031. 2. In terms of regional distribution, Europe (34.5%) and North America (27.9%) are the main consumer markets, with China ranking third (20%) and showing the fastest growth rate, with annual imports of around 20,000–30,000 tons. V. Product profits: The overall gross margin in this industry ranges from 25% to 40%, with significant differences among different product categories. For general-purpose products (used in packaging and ordinary coatings), the gross margin is 25%-30%, with a net profit of 18,000–25,000 yuan per ton. For high-end products (used in the new energy and electronics sectors), the gross margin is 35%-40%, resulting in a net profit of 40,000–60,000 yuan per ton. In terms of production costs, these amount to 80,000–100,000 yuan per ton; ethylene and acrylic acid account for 75% of the total raw material costs. Fluctuations in raw material prices are a key factor affecting profits. Thanks to its integrated C3 industrial chain, Satellite Chemical is able to reduce raw material costs by 10%-15%. VI. Major Manufacturers and Production Capacity: Global production capacity is highly concentrated in Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. Dow first achieved industrial-scale production of EAA in 1961 through a partnership with UCC; after acquiring UCC in 2001, it integrated all of UCC’s EAA-related technologies. In 2017, it transferred its EAA business to South Korea’s SK Geo Centric, though it still remains involved in the market indirectly through existing cooperative production lines. Its core technologies continue to serve as an important foundation for the global EAA industry ; DuPont (72,000 tons per year), Ineos Switzerland (57,000 tons per year), Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan (56,000 tons per year), SK Geo Centric of South Korea (55,000 tons per year; the production capacity comes from the acquisition of Dow’s EAA business), ExxonMobil (28,000 tons per year). In South Korea, Satai Chemical and SK Group have jointly established CHN Core, which has an EAA production facility with a capacity of 40,000 tons per year set to go into operation soon; a second phase with a capacity of 50,000 tons per year is planned, bringing the total domestic production capacity to 90,000 tons per year. VII. Industry Development Trends 1. Accelerated localization: Once satellite chemical production facilities come online, they will break the overseas monopoly; it is expected that the domestic localization rate will rise to over 60% by 2030, reducing the costs of battery materials used in downstream applications by 5%-8%. 2. Growing demand: There is rapid growth in demand in areas such as new energy vehicles, green packaging, and smart devices, which constitute the main drivers of growth in this industry ; 3. Technical upgrades: Domestic research institutions are advancing the development of proprietary manufacturing processes, and the coordination insertion polymerization method is gradually maturing, offering the potential to overcome the technical barriers associated with high temperature and high pressure conditions ; 4. Layout restructuring: The expansion of domestic production capacity has intensified competition in the global market. Domestic companies take advantage of their cost advantages to capture the mid- and low-end markets, while they still need to make breakthroughs in the high-end market. In summary, as a high-end specialty thermoplastic polymer, EAA has long been in a situation of supply constraints. The commissioning of the 40,000-ton satellite chemical plant marks a breakthrough in the localization of EAA in China, and it will reshape the global market landscape.
