The used engine oil remains black after flocculation; seeking advice!

I have been working on the recycling of used engine oil recently; the oil in question is that taken out from vehicles. I first let it settle at 80 degrees, and then carried out a flocculation process – quite a lot of material settled out as a result. But why is the color still black? What exactly are these black substances? Carbon buildup? Gel? But some impurities have already settled, and I don’t understand what’s going on. If black oil remaining after flocculation is washed with white clay, can it become transparent? Please, experts, give me some guidance!
