The cooling methods for air compressors generally include water-cooled and air-cooled types. It’s hard to say which of these two methods is better; it depends on the environment in which they are used. The so-called water-cooled cooling method utilizes the flow of cooling water and temperature differences to keep the temperature of the air compressor equipment within a certain range. Its advantages and disadvantages are as follows: Advantages: 1. Since cooling water has a certain cleaning effect, it can clean the interior of the air compressor as it flows through it. It helps to extend the maintenance and cleaning cycle of the equipment and improve the quality of compressed gas ; 2. Water-cooled machines have good adaptability to climate changes; increasing or decreasing the water pressure allows them to adapt to significant temperature fluctuations ; 3. In dusty environments, such as in industries like textiles, spraying, carbon black, and titanium dioxide, water-cooled chillers are more reliable ; 4. The cooler of the water-cooled machine has an oil side that is easy to clean, something that is not possible with air-cooled machines. Disadvantages: 1. Limited by water resources; therefore, its applicability is relatively narrow ; 2. The cooling water may contain ions such as calcium and magnesium, which are prone to undergoing chemical reactions in the cooler due to high temperatures; these reactions result in the formation of scale within the cooler, thereby reducing its cooling efficiency. The so-called air-cooled cooling method utilizes the flow of air to carry away heat, thereby keeping the air compressor within an appropriate temperature range. Its advantages and disadvantages are as follows: Advantages: The great advantage of the air-cooled cooling method is that it is not affected by environmental factors, allowing it to be used in almost any location. Disadvantages: 1. If the air quality in the surrounding area is poor, it can easily contaminate the entire air compressor and the compressed air. To avoid this, it is advisable to install filtering equipment ; 2. If used in an enclosed space, it is recommended to install intake and exhaust ventilation equipment ; 3. Its cooling effect and quality are inferior to those of water-cooled types. Unless in an environment with severe water scarcity, water-cooled systems are recommended as the first choice. Since air-cooled systems have a simple structure and require less investment, their heat dissipation performance is poor due to certain limitations, which is why they are mostly used in small air compressors. Although water-cooled systems have a complex structure and require high technical expertise, they offer excellent heat dissipation, are easy to adjust, and operate reliably. Therefore, water-cooling is widely used in large- and medium-sized air compressors.
Generally, water-cooled systems have higher operating efficiency than air-cooled systems, but they require a certain setup for the circulating water system. If the quality of the circulating water cannot be guaranteed, its stability and energy consumption will actually be worse than those of air-cooled systems. Air-cooled air compressors installed indoors must be equipped with deflectors; otherwise, the room temperature will rise sharply, resulting in reduced operating efficiency or even malfunction. Where conditions permit, it is advisable to also install a deflector on water-cooled screw chillers. What is being discussed here seems to be screw compressors; during process design, it’s preferable to use centrifugal air compressors when a slightly higher flow rate is required. Centrifugal air compressors have advantages over screw compressors in terms of efficiency and maintenance. The drawback is its low load regulation capability. According to the information found, well-known air compressor manufacturers have not been making significant investments in the development of screw compressors in recent years.
