Before we know it, one-third of the first month of 2019 has already passed. Have you started doing those things you promised yourself at the turn of the year? Still wanting to change but still hesitating in the face of reality? Engineers, facing 2019, the right way to approach things should be like this: Keyword: change. We often think: Don’t we take on a job as an engineer, one that involves working in harsh weather and being away from home most of the time, just for a higher salary? But I don’t know since when, even the motivation that came from salary has been fading away gradually Indeed, we often lament our bad luck and being born at the wrong time; living in such an era, we don’t even have the courage to change careers. We come up with many reasons, but reality still defeats us, and we end up crying under the covers in the middle of the night, not knowing what to do. Whenever faced with such problems, it pains us who are working hard outside, but there is no other way except to strive to improve ourselves. Many engineers feel that there is too little room for improvement, so when trying to identify problems they fail to see their own faults, which prevents them from making any changes to improve the situation. Once we realize this, how should we go about making changes? Change your mindset and love your profession. Most people simply treat their work as a means to make ends meet, and some even consider engineering jobs to be shameful; but how can such an attitude enable one to do their job diligently? Once one enters the field of engineering, one should calm down and dedicate oneself to it. I will do my best to perform my duties diligently. Ask yourself: you always complain about your low salary, but have you really done your best in everything? Indeed, we can’t devote our whole heart to everything, but at the very least, we should do our best and carry out our duties conscientiously. Be proactive and brave enough to take the lead. Why can some people run faster even when they start from the same line? Those who are able to take initiative in doing things are better at identifying and solving problems, and as a result, they improve more quickly. In our daily work, we prefer employees who take the initiative to act. If you want to bring about a change, then shift your mindset from “I have to do it” to “I want to do it”. The question then becomes: What capabilities do we need to possess in order to improve work efficiency and become an irreplaceable leader within the team? For engineers, important skills include communication and collaboration in order to leverage the strength of the team. Engineering projects cannot be completed by one person alone; a person with leadership skills must be good at communicating and able to bring together everyone on the team. To become a leader, communication and collaboration are essential skills. Focus on efficiency; use key elements to drive overall progress. Quantify daily tasks, keep the most important matters in mind, and devote most of your time to what truly needs to be done. Efficiency is the key factor determining an individual’s work performance; to stand out in a team, it is necessary to improve one’s efficiency. Be brave enough to take responsibility and fulfill one’s duties. Taking responsibility involves accepting challenging tasks as well as being willing to assume accountability; the ability to complete difficult tasks is an asset that is highly valued, but the willingness to be responsible for one’s own work is an even more important attitude and skill in modern society. Only by being brave enough to take on one’s responsibilities can one shoulder heavy burdens. Be eager to learn* and improve your professional skills. It’s never a bad thing to keep learning* at any time and in any place; in engineering, being able to continuously enhance your professional knowledge will serve as a stepping stone for your progress. Be good at thinking and observing in order to find breakthroughs. Daily work can easily lead to boredom, but if you view each task as a way to defeat enemies and level up, seeing each problem solved as a step forward, then even this monotonous routine becomes much more interesting. You need to realize that, as a normal person, this state is entirely normal. But more importantly, you need to consider whether you are willing to stay in the engineering industry forever Are you willing to settle down and live such a life for the rest of your life? Changing careers is difficult, especially if you have been working for over a decade before trying to do so; it’s better to think it through from the start. If one wants to stay in the engineering industry, then the question becomes: how can we grow rapidly within a year? In general: open your eyes, take steps forward, learn to speak and to stay silent, and learn to study and grow. Open your eyes and strive to learn from your master*; observe for yourself how others do things and pay attention to the details that matter. If the instructor doesn’t take the initiative to teach, don’t complain; after all, it’s kind of them to help you, but it’s their duty anyway. In such cases, you need to be more proactive, asking more questions and thinking more carefully. Take action and work diligently; no industry will tolerate lazy people who bring no benefit to it. As a beginner, you have to learn more than others, and approaching your tasks with a proper attitude will make things much easier for you. Learn to speak and when to stay silent. Every new environment requires a period of adjustment; when you arrive in a new place, don’t rush to show yourself off. Learn to observe others’ reactions, think before speaking, as the way you address people is important – try to avoid saying anything wrong. Often we don’t want to complicate things too much, but that’s how society works – we need to be cautious and do what is appropriate. Learn to study and grow – learn to understand projects, be aware of the workload associated with each one, and identify the key difficulties in each sub-project or component of a project. If there are aspects you don’t master, do your best to overcome them, gain experience, and thus \"age\" as a professional. For engineers, it’s essential to have some professional knowledge. If there are areas of expertise they don’t understand, they can try to learn more through various channels. Postscript: While writing this article, I kept reminding myself not to make it sound like motivational fluff – after all, life remains difficult as ever, and we may still face uncertainties. But at least we have begun to realize the need for change, which is a good start. We might not be able to do everything, but at least we can improve little by little.
