I need help. I’m building a flower bed; the soil is quite alkaline, and now alkalinity rebound has occurred. How should I deal with this issue and how can I avoid it in future constructions?
Alkalinity resistance is generally caused by the presence of calcium carbonate compounds in the water used for materials or construction. It is caused by a chemical reaction of the calcium carbonate components within the walls when the weather is humid and air circulation is poor. The common remedy is to clean the walls with white vinegar, oxalic acid, or hydrochloric acid during the construction of the building or before decoration, in order to neutralize their calcium carbonate components. However, depending on the region, the proportion of calcareous components in the water or construction materials varies, so using white vinegar, oxalic acid, or hydrochloric acid blindly to neutralize its alkalinity will not provide a permanent solution. In this case, it is necessary to test the key components in its antialkali properties in order to prescribe the appropriate treatment. If testing is to be carried out unconditionally, one side of the four walls facing the outdoors can be covered with polyethylene propylene fabric before further decoration. Walls between indoor rooms are not necessary. Things like anti-alkali putty, anti-alkali coatings, paint, and the like won’t work; I’ve learned this the hard way. Both putty and paints contain adhesives; when the calcium compounds present in the wall undergo a chemical reaction, these adhesives can more easily draw out those calcium compounds, whereas paint cannot do this. However, paint can effectively prevent the leakage of tobacco juice.
