“The Global Summit on the Development and Utilization of Underground Space in Cities and the 7th China (Shanghai) Underground Space Development Conference 2019 will be held grandly at the Baolong Hotel in Shanghai from October 28 to 29, 2019. Themed around the initiative for the development and utilization of underground space in cities under the Belt and Road Initiative, this conference will bring together renowned academicians and experts from home and abroad in the field of underground space. It will facilitate in-depth exchanges and discussions from multiple disciplines and perspectives, as well as the sharing of advanced technologies and successful practices related to the development and utilization of urban underground space. This will help to advance research in this area and promote the achievement of four key strategic goals: inclusivity, safety, resilience, and sustainability in cities, thereby creating more pleasant living environments. At the same time, leveraging the advantages of the industrial chain associated with underground space conferences, efforts are being made to create a professional exchange platform in the field of underground spaces that combines business negotiations, international exchanges, and brand displays. The 21st century is the century of the development and utilization of human underground spaces. Seeking space, resources, and safety from beneath the ground is an inevitable trend in the modernization process of countries and regions around the world, and the high-quality development and sustainable use of underground spaces have become an international consensus. Against this backdrop, with the assistance of the International Association for the Study of Underground Spaces (ACUUS) and in collaboration with UN-Habitat, the \"2018-2019 Action Plan for Urban Underground Spaces\" was launched. As the second step of this plan, a \"Global Summit on the Development and Utilization of Urban Underground Spaces\" is planned to be held. Highlights of the main forum included speeches by a representative from UN-Habitat, Dimitris Kaliampakos, head of the International Joint Research Center for Underground Space; Guo Yunchong, president of the Chinese Society of Civil Engineering and former vice minister of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development; Ma Xingfa, secretary of the Party Leadership Group and deputy head of the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology; Liu Qianwei, chief engineer of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development; Gu Weihua, president of the Shanghai Society of Civil Engineering and CEO of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd.; Gu Xianglin, vice president of Tongji University. A representative from UN-Habitat signed a MOU between ACUUS and UN-Habitat, and the Shanghai Declaration was also released. Jacques Besner/Sanja Zlatanic, secretaries-general of the International Joint Research Center for Underground Space, presented reports on the urban development of Shanghai, New York, and Tokyo. Additionally, a global digital platform for knowledge on underground space was launched, and leading experts such as Academician Qian Qihu and Academician Chen Xiangsheng delivered keynote speeches. During the conference, an exhibition area will be set up to showcase new technologies, processes, equipment, and materials related to the construction and management of urban underground spaces. It will feature achievements in the planning and construction of urban underground spaces, advanced equipment used in construction and testing, information on green and environmentally friendly materials and processes, as well as integrated utility tunnels and pipelines.
