For surface water sources, before the RO system is started for the first time, the pretreatment system must have been tuned and tested, and its output water quality must meet the requirements for operating the RO system. The pretreatment of raw water should include sterilization, coagulation, clarification, and filtration. It is very important that the chemicals used in this pretreatment process are compatible with those used in the RO system. For example, certain cationic polyelectrolytes are effective in the coagulation process, but they react with (NaPO3)6 used in the RO system to form precipitates that can severely damage the RO membranes; therefore, they cannot be used. After secondary filtration, the turbidity of the water should be less than 0.2 NTU, and the SDI value must be less than 5. Before feeding water into the RO system, the pretreatment system must be operating properly, and the quality of the feed water must meet the requirements for RO feed water. The specific steps are as follows. ⑴Expel the air from the system under low pressure. ⑵Check and eliminate leaks in the system. ⑶Use low-pressure water to flush the protective fluid of the membrane element out of the permeator (open the concentrated brine discharge valve). ⑷Drain the product water into the gutter. ⑸Open the concentrated water pressure relief valve. ⑹The opening of the throttle valve at the high-pressure pump outlet was adjusted to 50% of its initial pressure. ⑺Start the high-pressure pump for flushing until it is clean. ⑻Turn off the concentrated water discharge valve, adjust the concentrated water pressure reducing valve, adjust the throttle valve at the outlet of the feed water pump, open the product water outlet valve, and close the product water discharge valve until the designed flow rate of product water and the system recovery rate are achieved. ⑼Run for 72 hours on trial. ⑽Maintaining proper operation records includes a list of instruments and chemicals used in the tests; test methods; the pretreatment system; automatic control of raw water heating; coagulation cup tests; chlorine dosage tests; determination of effluent turbidity, and SDI measurement.
