Pollution is often not singular, and its symptoms vary to some extent, making it more difficult to identify the type of pollution. To identify the type of contamination, it is necessary to consider various factors such as the quality of the raw water, design parameters, pollution indices, operation records, changes in equipment performance, and microbial indicators. 1. Colloidal contamination: When colloidal contamination occurs, it is usually accompanied by the following two characteristics: (1) The microfilters used in pre-treatment become clogged very quickly, especially with a rapid increase in pressure difference; (2) The SDI value is typically above 2.5. 2. Microbial contamination: When microbial contamination occurs, the total bacterial count in both the permeate water and concentrated water from the RO system is high, indicating that maintenance and disinfection have not been carried out as required. 3. Calcium scale: It can be determined based on the quality of the raw water and the design parameters. For carbonate-type water, if the recovery rate is 75% and a scale inhibitor is added during design, the LSI of the concentrate should be less than 1; if no scale inhibitor is used, the LSI of the concentrate should be less than zero, and calcium scaling generally does not occur. 4. Pickling with acids (such as citric acid or dilute HNO3) can be used; calcium scale can be identified based on the cleaning effect and the cleaning solution, with further confirmation obtained through analysis of the components of the cleaning solution. 5. Chemical analysis of the cleaning solution: Samples of the raw water, the original cleaning solution, and the cleaning solution itself are taken for analysis; once the type of contamination is identified, disinfection cleaning is carried out.
Equipment in pure water systems needs to be cleaned regularly, especially the RO membranes; once they become clogged, the water output is significantly reduced and the water quality will definitely fail to meet standards. The pretreatment system also needs to be backwashed regularly. The quality of raw water varies in different regions, and so do the cleaning cycles.
