Global Jilin Chemical Construction’s 600,000 tons/year styrene plant achieved successful commissioning on the first attempt

At 19:58 on October 20, the 600,000-ton/year styrene plant at Jilin Petrochemical, constructed by the Styrene Project Department of Huanqiu Jilin Chemical Construction, successfully produced qualified styrene products, marking the successful commissioning of the plant on the first attempt. It is understood that Jilin Petrochemical’s 600,000 tons per year styrene production facility consists mainly of an ethylbenzene unit and a styrene unit. It employs the Dow/Begell molecular sieve liquid-phase alkylation process as well as the ethylbenzene dehydrogenation process – technologies that represent the most advanced, reliable, and efficient methods for producing styrene in the world today. The styrene produced is a key raw material for ABS manufacturing, and it plays an important role in the framework of projects aimed at transformation and upgrading. The project commenced civil construction in June 2023; after 25 months of intensive work, it was completed on July 30, 2025. A total of 34,617 cubic meters of concrete were used for civil works, 9,104 tons of steel structures were installed, 328,495 inches worth of process piping was welded, 322 pieces of equipment were installed, 2,890 pieces of electrical and instrumentation equipment were installed, 840,000 meters of electrical cables were laid, 4,154 instrumentation points were calibrated, and 7,980 cubic meters of insulation material was used. Looking back at the construction process, the project team has always adhered to the principle of \"safety first, quality foremost,\" fulfilled its responsibilities, and demonstrated the excellent attitude of the professionals in this field – the willingness to take on tough challenges and succeed in them. Faced with challenges such as the intensive prefabrication and installation of process pipelines during winter, and the difficulty in carrying out equipment installation efficiently due to limited space, the project leadership took charge of operations, leading all team members to stick to their posts and work together to overcome these obstacles. Enduring extreme cold and scorching heat, they made continuous efforts to advance the project construction, contributing their wisdom and strength to achieving the goals set by CCCC. Before the unit was put into operation, the project team worked together closely to overcome various challenges, assisting the owner in carrying out the preparatory tasks prior to commissioning such as the \"three inspections and four determinations\" and \"joint commissioning tests.\" This effort laid a solid foundation for a smooth start-up process, and ultimately, a successful first commissioning achieved, delivering a satisfactory result to the owner.
