Small Innovation by CNOOC Engineering – Development and Application of a Special Scanner for PAUT Inspection of Longitudinal Seams

Minor innovation – Development and use of a specialized scanner for inspecting longitudinal welds in PAUT processes. Project challenges: To ensure accurate inspection of longitudinal welds in offshore engineering welding, it was necessary to keep the scanning path of the PAUT probe on a straight line; therefore, a scanner was designed and manufactured, with its main structure consisting of a straight aluminum alloy profile marked with scales. This structure included a stop mechanism for holding the probe in place as well as a guide rail to assist the movement of the probe. Innovations: The guide rail allows the probe to inspect the entire longitudinal weld, while the stop mechanism prevents the probe from slipping off the main structure. This scanner enables phased-array inspection of the longitudinal welds on coiled pipes, ensuring that both the probe and the encoder move in a straight line along the weld. Implementation and application: After being used in the ***LNG project, this longitudinal weld scanner was successfully applied in projects such as Marjan P1Gosp-4, significantly improving the quality and efficiency of data collection
